Plotting Along

I have always found writing to be therapeutic and restorative- it seems as days go, and they tend to go however they wish, one might feel a little lost- a little out of control, but when I sit down to write, it all comes back into line- I am the one in control, I decide what happens in the world.

The key to good writing, I believe, is to surprise, create tension, add mystery, suggest possibilities to engage your reader, introduce deception but never reveal the truth......until its the exact right moment. A difficult task and gaging at what Hollywood is producing these days, not all that easy even for the most seasoned and experienced writer. I feel like so much is just a cop-out, something to get you into the theatre- and then BAM- they have you and medocre- even with a lot of special effects and chase scenes, is just OK.

When I do encounter a GREAT story, I am so excited, as though I have found something truly amazing! I am so impressed when I am impressed with a good writier's writing, when I am surprised and swept up in the storyline and find myself admiring the intelligence and wit of the writer. I think as writers, it is difficult to "fool" us. We are so used to writing and looking ahead, that we often find ourselves easily guessing what is around the next corner in a book or movie and it is very dissapointing to be right. No one like a, Duh!

How can a good writer keep coming up with the truly unexpected- so refeshing, so delightful, so....dare I say ...awe inspiring? I propose that instead of writing it forward, we play it backward. We begin the concept of our plot along with twists in our characters and action by beginning at the end- on paper of course, and then like going through the maze beginning at the center.... we find our way out to the beginning....which could prove most entertaining.

So- pay it backwards and see what happens! Respectfully, WriteWing
